1990 – The term “Digital Marketing” was first used in this year
1990 – The first search engine of the world “Archie” was launched.
1993 – First time ever clickable banner advertising was introduced. This created a bigger revolution in the online advertising world.
1994 – Yahoo was launched
1996 – Search engines like Alexa and hotbot were launched

1997
Firstever social media site was launched. It was named as sixdegrees.com
1998
In this year lot of big things happened. Google was launched. Yahoo also came out with its “yahoo ! web search”. Microsoft too launched MSN
2000
Dotcom crashed everywhere in the world. Small dotcom companies shut their shops. The first social media site sixdegrees also was closed down.
2002
Dotcom companies some how fought back and again started getting funds from investors. LinkedIn was launched
2003
WordPress was launched. My space was also launched during this period.
2004
Eventhough free email services were provided by companies like hotmail, yahoo, rediffmail they had restrictions on sending attachments of bigger size and total mail box size was also limited. Google launched its email services “Gmail” with 1GB free storage for its users. This was the master stroke by Google which made millions of users to create accounts in Gmail. Google also became a public limited company in this year. Social media company Facebook was made live in this year.
2005
Youtube the largest video hosting service was launched by 3 ex employees of paypal employees. Of course it was bought by Google in 2006.
2006
Twitter was launched. Microsoft launched MS live search. Amazon set a new record in online sales by crossing 10 billion USD. Split testing in marketing was introduced
2007
Apple’s iphone was launched. Tumblr another popular social media site was launched. Web streaming service provider Hulu was founded
2008
Groupon the online deal market place was launched. This had created a whole lot of opportunities for other marketplace players to work on discounts and offers to increase their revenues. United states was overtaken by China in number of internet users.
2009
Google launched instant for real time search engine results
2010
The most used mobile application in India “Whatsapp” was launched in 2010.
2011
Google plus and Google panda was launched. Eventhough Google plus was launched as a competitive product for Facebook, till now Google could not succeed in its objective.
2012
Google knowledge graph was launched
2013
Tumblr was acquired by Yahoo.
2014
People browsing internet on their mobile phones increased and overtook the PC market. Facebook acquired whatsapp for 19 billion USD which happened to be one of the largest purchase by a venture backed company. Facebook messenger app was also launched during this year. Lookback feature on Facebook was released. LinkedIn came up with its Ads.
2015
Snapchat came out with its “discover” feature. Predictive analysis, wearable tech devices and content marketing were most happening during this period. “Instant articles” feature in Facebook was released.
